The 2010 21st century laser lava lamp
Discover the historic origins of the dream dome experience. Created in 2010, this experimental sculpture paired a compact pico laser projector with an inverted acrylic dome to transform two-dimensional artwork into living, morphing volumetric light.

Inverting the projection canvas
Constructed as a tall cylindrical base crowned by an inverted dome, the 2010 prototype was born from a simple curiosity: how would dynamic animations translate when projected directly upwards into curved space? Housing an early pico laser projector, the installation beamed Kris's moving art films upward, accompanied by evocative original soundscapes composed by Robert.

Faux holography in motion
When beamed into the curved canopy, traditional flat 2D film sequences immediately broke free from standard screen boundaries. The visuals cascaded down the curved interior walls as morphing, moving faux holographs. The dramatic optical distortion imparted an uncanny three-dimensional presence, bringing organic digital flow to life.

The genesis of the hypnagogic dream dome
Over sixteen years later, this breakthrough lamp prototype stands as the true foundation of today's Hypnagogic Laser Dream Dome. Evolving from this 2010 experiment into a full-scale immersive installation, the latest dome utilises cutting-edge 3RGB laser projection and a large opaque white acrylic canopy to deliver unmatched definition, deep hues, and transcendent visual music.
