The cone illusion: outside looking in, inside looking out

Explore a bistable volumetric light sculpture where depth refuses to stay still. Bridging a twenty-year drawing archive with cutting-edge curvilinear laser projection, this work captures light inside an opal vessel, creating a modern magic lantern that breathes with binocular parallax and resonant binaural sound.

A bistable illusion suspended in light

Much like a classic Necker Cube, the Cone Illusion challenges human spatial perception. Your brain constantly flips between two competing states: is the cone reaching out toward you, or drawing you deep into an infinite tunnel? Projected from an RGB laser base upward into a 400x200mm opal acrylic dome, the rear-scatter diffusion suspends light inside the vessel itself rather than painting it onto a screen. As you walk around, genuine binocular parallax keeps your eyes hunting for depth that continually shifts and breathes.

Bridging two decades of hand and laser

For over twenty years, my classic portfolio was inherently volumetric—tunnels, sacred geometry, and Green Men trapped on flat paper. Today, that archive is reborn. Each original artwork has been adapted into a 3840x3840 fisheye movie, warped into curvilinear perspective, and ignited with laser light. Combined with my late partner’s original binaural beat hertz compositions, the music tunes your perception to the visual flip. It is a seamless convergence of classic handcraft, laser technology, and heartfelt memory.

Two scales: the tabletop dome and the 12m sphere

In the intimate 400mm tabletop edition, you stand outside looking in at an exquisite miniature universe with headphones delivering gentle, music-box binaural beats. Within the expansive 12-metre environmental dome, you step completely inside the cone looking out, feeling the deep resonance vibrate directly through your chest. Whether discovering the working prototype in my living room or collaborating with galleries, planetariums, and creative makers, you are warmly invited to experience light held inside.
